Makgadikgadi National Park

Makgadikgadi National Park is one of Botswana’s most fascinating and unique wilderness destinations, offering visitors an extraordinary combination of vast landscapes, rich wildlife, ancient history, and unforgettable safari experiences. Located on the western edge of the legendary Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, the park forms part of one of the largest salt pan systems in the world, remnants of a vast prehistoric super-lake that once covered much of northern Botswana thousands of years ago.

Today, the park is a landscape of striking contrasts. Expansive grasslands, ancient riverbeds, palm-studded islands, mopane woodlands, and open plains create a diverse environment that supports an impressive variety of wildlife. During the dry season, the landscape appears stark and seemingly endless, while the arrival of the summer rains transforms the region into a lush and vibrant ecosystem teeming with life.

Makgadikgadi National Park is perhaps best known for hosting one of Africa’s last great wildlife migrations. Each year, following the seasonal rains, tens of thousands of zebras and wildebeest move into the region in search of fresh grazing. This remarkable event, considered the second-largest zebra migration in Africa, attracts numerous predators and creates spectacular wildlife viewing opportunities. Lions, cheetahs, leopards, spotted hyenas, and jackals are among the predators that follow these herds across the plains.

The park is also famous for its healthy populations of desert-adapted wildlife. Visitors regularly encounter zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, kudu, impala, springbok, and steenbok, while the elusive brown hyena is one of the area’s most sought-after sightings. Birdlife flourishes during the wet season when temporary wetlands attract flamingos, pelicans, storks, and a wide variety of migratory species, creating a paradise for bird enthusiasts and photographers.

One of the region’s most iconic attractions is its population of habituated meerkats. These curious and charismatic animals have become renowned for their relaxed behaviour around people, often providing intimate wildlife encounters that are both entertaining and memorable.

Beyond its wildlife, Makgadikgadi offers some of the most dramatic scenery in Botswana. Endless horizons, towering baobab trees, shimmering salt pans, and spectacular sunsets create a sense of scale and beauty that is difficult to match. The area is equally renowned for its exceptional stargazing, with clear night skies revealing countless stars, planets, and the brilliant sweep of the Milky Way.

Makgadikgadi National Park is a destination that combines adventure, solitude, and natural wonder. Whether exploring ancient salt pans, tracking migrating wildlife, meeting meerkats, or simply taking in the vastness of the Kalahari landscape, visitors are rewarded with a truly unique safari experience that captures the wild spirit of Botswana.
