Central Kalahari Game Reserve

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) is one of Africa’s last great wilderness areas and among the largest protected reserves in the world. Covering more than 52,000 square kilometres in the heart of Botswana, this vast and remote landscape offers an unparalleled sense of space, solitude, and untamed beauty. Established in 1961, the reserve was originally created to protect the traditional homeland of the San people, whose deep connection with the Kalahari stretches back thousands of years.

Far from being an empty desert, the Central Kalahari is a rich and diverse ecosystem characterized by rolling grasslands, fossil river valleys, ancient sand dunes, acacia woodlands, and open plains that seem to stretch endlessly to the horizon. The reserve’s dramatic scenery changes throughout the seasons. During the summer rains, the grasslands burst into life, attracting large herds of wildlife and transforming the landscape into a vibrant green oasis. In the dry winter months, the reserve reveals a stark yet captivating beauty, with wildlife concentrating around natural water sources and mineral-rich pans.

The Central Kalahari is renowned for its exceptional predator viewing. The reserve is particularly famous for its magnificent black-maned Kalahari lions, whose impressive size and striking appearance have become legendary among safari enthusiasts. Other predators found here include cheetahs, leopards, brown hyenas, spotted hyenas, African wild cats, bat-eared foxes, jackals, and occasionally the elusive caracal.

Herbivores thrive in this unique environment and include large herds of springbok, gemsbok, red hartebeest, blue wildebeest, eland, kudu, and giraffe. Following seasonal rains, vast migrations of zebra and wildebeest move across the grasslands, creating spectacular wildlife spectacles rarely witnessed elsewhere in southern Africa.

A safari in the Central Kalahari is unlike any other. Visitors are drawn not only by the wildlife but by the profound sense of wilderness and isolation. Days are spent exploring remote tracks and expansive valleys such as Deception Valley, Sunday Pan, and Piper Pan, while evenings offer breathtaking sunsets and some of the clearest night skies on Earth. Far from crowds and modern distractions, the reserve provides an authentic connection to nature.

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is a destination for true wilderness seekers, offering raw beauty, extraordinary wildlife encounters, and an unforgettable glimpse into one of Africa’s most pristine and untouched landscapes.
